The number of passengers and ticket revenue in public transport increased from the first to the second quarter of this year but is still lower than before the corona pandemic.

Public transport counted 10 million more passengers in the second quarter of 2022 than in the first quarter, an increase of 7%, figures from Statistics Norway (SSB) show.

At the same time, the figures show that the number of passengers in the second quarter of this year is 92% of the number in the same quarter in 2019 – before the pandemic hit Norway.

In total, in the second quarter of this year, approximately 153 million trips were made by bus, boat, rail, tramway, and suburban rail. That is an increase from 142.8 million in the first quarter but 8% lower than the second quarter of 2019.

The figures from the public transport statistics show that all forms of public transport have seen passenger growth from the previous quarter. The number of people traveling by bus is 6% lower than in the same quarter in 2019, before the pandemic, and is therefore approaching normal. Meanwhile, train traffic is struggling – it is 16% lower than before the corona pandemic struck.

Ticket revenue in the second quarter of 2022 was NOK 3.6 billion, an increase of 30% from the previous quarter but 8% lower than before the pandemic, according to Statistics Norway.
